Book Smart – exemplifies ones desire to be disciplined in the art of being taught.
Street Smart – personifies the need to learn by any means necessary
However you choose to garner your education, never be so judgmental that you look down on the knowledge of others. Not everyone has a desire to experience “higher” learning, nor is it feasible to dismiss the lessons of life.
For those who feel that education is a conformity of life, be mindful of the words you speak because education avails itself in various forms. Never take for granted the lessons the street teach or the history that the book reveals. Instead, learn to leverage them both in order to form you own opinions, your own values, your own views. Implement the duel knowledge to future your aspirations, your hopes and your dreams. Seek to maximize the gift of gab with the study of literature to expound upon your philosophies that increase social awareness and perpetuate the realities of social justice and expose the inequality that made you chose a path when both ways where always and option.
For those who feel that cultured or urbane wisdom is non-quintessential and has about as much value as the nature or natural environment in which it was breed, know that it was never a question of whether you graduated high school or excelled in college because in the game of life, the moral code by which we live is environmentally biased.
NO, the real question, regardless of how your learned the lesson, is and will always be: can your methods and actions of educating a people be repeated for positive results regardless of who implements them?
I’ve been a Social Worker all my life. Even when I thought I wanted to be a singer and a dancer, an actress and a poet, a computer scientist and an accountant. In learning all these trades, I inadvertently began learning my purpose. Once I realized my true calling, my educational goals and advancement became more tailored towards that purpose. In order to achieve the maximum potential and offer the most exemplary service I need to learn people and by studying different cultures and civilizations, eras and movements, arts and designs, social structures and societies I plan on accomplishing that goal. Never judgmental or close-minded, never disrespectful or dismissive to others and their opinions but ready to listen and understand, gaining another perspective. Books teach you history but with people you experience life.
What I also learned was that as you walk through the paths of your life, you can be fearful yet not afraid, you can be cautious but continue on. You sit with your adversaries to observe their strengths and weakness but never be judgmental in doing so. You become mindful of your friends and understand that loyalty is their choosing and sometimes that choice is not you. You can be guided first of God (if you believe) then by yourself as you learn to connect with your inner being to determine your purpose and if one doesn’t come to you, sit a while longer because we all have a reason for being.
Remain humble, respectful, open-minded, observant and proud. You are more than that which you are afraid of especially once you turn on the light that lives in you.
Life is filled with swift transition therefore resilient must you be. The ability to recover, bounce back get up and start again or continue on is a skill most worth having. To be erudite or in other words learned is a gift that cannot be and should not be taken for granted. Scintillating, witty, sparkling words will only get you so far in this life. There is also an inherent need to be perspicacious; observant and understanding.
And when the time comes for mistakes, and you will make them, be urbane, courteous and polite in your refined response because it is never wise to burn bridges that you may need to cross again. Go forward with the understanding that change is constant and satisfaction is ever changing therefore be not content with mediocrity but strive always to achieve your level of greater good and then move forward towards the next goal.
